Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA)

The MMPA prohibits, with certain exceptions, the take of marine mammals in US waters and by US citizens on the high seas, and the importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products into the United States.


Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973

US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Endangered Species Act, passed in 1973, was passed to protect and recover imperiled species and their ecosystems. Responsibility for implementing the Act is shared jointly by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (land and freshwater species) and the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (marine and andromous species).

This law (effective September 17, 2007) makes it illegal to move certain types of big cats across State lines for U.S. borders unless qualified as exempt.


Permits

US Fish & Wildlife Service.

The FWS issues permits under various wildlife laws and treaties at different offices at the national, regional, and/or wildlife port levels.

NOTE: Hunting and fishing licenses are issued by State wildlife agencies.

This US federal law that acknowledges the endangered status of African elephants and allocates money toward conservation efforts.


Asian Elephant Conservation Act of 1997

US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Establishes the Asian Elephant Conservation Fuind and instructs the Secretary of the Interior to use amounts in the fund to provide financial assistance for projects for the conservation of Asian elephants.
